Fedasil’s shelter in Broechem (Antwerp Province) located opposite sheds where a heavy fire raged on Wednesday night, has been evacuated, the asylum agency’s spokesperson, Mieke Candaele, reported.
The shelter’s residents are being accommodated in a community centre in the area, which is part of Ranst municipality.
“The fire brigade has ordered the complete evacuation of the centre due to smoke nuisance and the possible presence of hazardous substances,” Ms. Candaele said.
The 435 men, women and children were transferred by buses and escorted by shelter staff to the Den Boomgaard community centre in Broechem. The length of time the residents would have to stay at the community centre was still to be determined.
The evacuation went smoothly, according to information reaching Ms. Candaele. “Fedasil thanks the mayor and the municipality for the quick help and evacuation, and for immediately finding a solution for the residents,” she added.
On Wednesday evening, a heavy shed fire raged in Broechem. A total of four sheds were destroyed and the fire had not yet been fully extinguished on Wednesday night.
The fire also released asbestos. Local residents were therefore advised to keep their windows and doors closed, and to stay indoors as much as possible.
