An investigation into a bout of sickness that hit 150 people at a school in Bruges on Friday has suggested the culprit could be a salmonella infection, the Flemish Care and Health Agency and the Federal Agency for the Safety of the Food Chain (AFSCA) announced.
On Friday, the Flemish Care and Health Agency received reports that 150 people at the Hotel and Tourism School Spermalie were suffering from intestinal and stomach pain.
Analysis of samples has suggested that school students and teachers may have suffered from a salmonella infection, although this has not been confirmed at this time.
AFSCA has taken samples from a meal served at the school on Thursday last week. More samples will be tested in the coming days.
"We are also starting an online survey of students and teachers to determine who ate what, in which school restaurant. We will do everything possible to define the source of the infection," said Joris Moonens, a spokesman for the Flemish Care and Health Agency.
