A 43-year-old man from Brussels, suspected of being behind a fire at a branch of Delhaize supermarkets in the south of Antwerp last week, has been arrested.

The motive behind the fire is still unknown, the Public Prosecutor's Office said.

Last Thursday, a row of shopping trolleys was set alight in the entrance to the Delhaize store in Museumstraat in Antwerp. The emergency services rapidly intervened and brought the flames under control before they reached the building. The shop was able to reopen later in the day.

Video surveillance footage enabled police to establish a link between a vehicle and the events, which then led to the identification of a suspect. The man was arrested in Brussels and placed under arrest by the examining magistrate on suspicion of arson. The suspect will appear before the council chamber on Wednesday.

The Public Prosecutor's Office was unable to determine whether the fire was linked to the ongoing social conflict at Delhaize or whether the suspect had another motive.
