An off-duty guard prevented a robbery attempt in a supermarket in Liège, managing to disarm the robbers as he wrapped up his evening grocery shopping.

Two masked individuals walked into a Carrefour Market in Flémalle, Liège, at around 7:30 PM, shortly before closing time, and raided the aisles of the supermarket located in Rue Beau Site.

When the unsuspecting robbers approached the register, demanding the clerk empty it of its contents, a client managed to disarm them, forcing them to flee the scene by foot, De Standaard reports.

The customer works a security guard and is said to have been in line after finishing his grocery shopping when he outsmarted the perpetrators, whose gun turned out to be unloaded.

Police reported the incident to Belgian media, confirming that nobody had been injured in the incident and saying the loot the robbers managed to make off with was unknown but likely meagre.
