Around twenty climate activists announced on Thursday their intention to lodge a complaint for police brutality during last weekend’s action.
Members of the Code Rouge movement organised protests near Deurne airport in Antwerp and Alibaba’s depot at Liège airport.
Despite claims of peaceful assembly by Code Rouge, roughly 535 activists faced arrest by police forces, some allegedly with extreme force.
Red Code reports include a protester in Antwerp who suffered from a broken arm and fingers due to a police baton, subsequently requiring surgery and a three-month recovery period.
Another protester in Liège allegedly suffered from a broken arm. Detainees were also reportedly denied access to essential medications, including insulin and asthma treatments.
According to Code Rouge, “These incidents merely represent the tip of the iceberg. More complaints will follow, particularly about the mistreatment of the hundreds of arrested individuals whose basic rights have been overlooked and infringed upon.”
The activists’ demands include a ban on private jets, an end to aviation subsidies, and increased investment in public transportation.
