A convicted drug trafficker has been extradited to Belgium following his arrest in Brazil, according to a statement by the Federal Police.
In January 2022, the drug trafficker – who has not been named – was sentenced to five years in prison by the Ghent Court of Appeal. He was found guilty of being part of a criminal organisation, specifically linked to organising activities aimed at recovering cocaine from the port of Antwerp. The man, who had fled the country, has yet to serve his sentence.
The offender was placed on an international wanted list following an investigation by the Antwerp police zone. Brazilian authorities quickly identified that he was in their country. He was apprehended by Brazilian police on 23 April as he prepared to board a flight in São Paulo.
The local authorities subsequently confirmed their decision to extradite the offender to Belgium. He finally arrived on Belgian soil on 14 December.
