A man fell into the Meuse river in Liège early on Monday morning and has died, Liège firefighters confirmed to RTL Info.
The incident occurred just before 06:00 on Monday morning at the Quai Van Beneden in Liège in front of the aquarium. According to local police, two individuals were returning from their New Year's Eve festivities, when one fell into the water.
The Liège fire brigade was then called to rescue the victim.
As of 11:00 on Monday, the body had still not been recovered as the current proved too strong, Liège's fire department stated. But the brigade confirmed that the man had died.
"The person sank, the conditions were difficult, and the water flow was high," they explained.
The brigade has not released any more information regarding the incident.
