A 42-year-old woman from Beersel, who was arrested after stabbing her former partner to death last weekend, was conditionally released by the examining magistrate on Tuesday, her lawyer said on Thursday, confirming a report in Het Laatste Nieuws.
The Hal-Vilvoorde public prosecutor's office declined to comment on the case "in the interest of the investigation."
The woman, A.C., and the man, I., had a relationship in 2014, and A.C. gave birth to a baby boy. The couple separated last April and then worked to find a custody arrangement for their infant son. This, however, did not go smoothly. In particular, the man was reportedly upset that his ex-girlfriend had entered another relationship just months after their separation, and had been calling her willy nilly.
On Friday 19 December, A.C. called her again but the conversation degenerated. The woman then asked him to call again the next day. However, I. suddenly appeared at her home shortly afterwards, at around 11.00 p.m., and lost his temper there. The woman called the police, while a neighbour tried in vain to calm I. down.
A.C. finally let her ex-partner in, but he is reported to have immediately punched her several times. The couple then went into the kitchen, where A.C. grabbed a knife to defend herself. When her ex-boyfriend attacked her again, the woman lost her temper and fatally stabbed him. A police patrol arrived on the scene and called for an ambulance, but it was already too late.
The woman was arrested and ordered detained by the investigating magistrate on suspicion of murder. She was conditionally released on Tuesday.
