The trial of Gaetano Medico, accused of murder, will commence at 14:00 on Wednesday at the Liège Assizes Court. Initial proceedings will be allocated to jury selection.
On the 25th of March, 2020, in the Alôre Chêne area of Flémalle, Medico allegedly murdered Michaël Bomerson. Bomerson, Medico’s former son-in-law, died after being shot multiple times.
This showdown occurred shortly after the breakdown of Bomerson’s relationship with Medico’s daughter. Medico, who lived opposite his former son-in-law, waited for Bomerson who was reportedly eager to confront Medico.
Arming himself due to fear, as he claimed, Medico allegedly shot an angry Bomerson five times. Four of these shots were potentially fatal, as Bomerson managed to escape a few hundred metres away before collapsing and later dying in hospital.
Medico portrayed himself as a peaceful man and regretfully acknowledged this tragic event. Bomerson, described by some witnesses as a violent drug user, had allegedly left his girlfriend and cleared out their bank accounts about ten days before his death.
Medico is charged with the murder of Bomerson and will be represented by lawyer Laurent Pacolet. Fabienne Bernard, the deputy prosecutor, will present the case for the prosecution.
The trial, expected to last eight working days, will be led by Judge Philippe Gorlé. Jury selection will take place on Wednesday 10th of January at 2pm, with the substantive hearing starting on Monday 15th January at 09:00
