Belgian citizens could be exempt from requiring a visa for short trips to China.
The news was announced by the Belgian Foreign Affairs Minister Hadja Lahbib on Friday after talks with Chinese officials, including her counterpart Wang Yi and President Xi Jinping.
Currently, five European Union countries enjoy this privilege: France, the Netherlands, Germany, Italy, and Spain. The list might soon extend, and Belgium is keen to be included.
According to Minister Lahbib, the Chinese leadership views the Belgian request positively.
"This would be a significant advancement. One could certainly state that Belgium belongs to this family of countries already benefitting from this," she added.
