Over a tonne of cocaine worth an estimated €135 million has been seized in Russia’s Saint Petersburg port.
During an inspection, local customs discovered the illicit drug concealed in bags of coffee arriving from Belgium. In a statement, officials reported seizing more than 1,200 kilos of cocaine, worth over 13 billion roubles on the black market (around €135 million at the current exchange rate).
The blocks of cocaine were hidden in coffee sacks shipped from Antwerp, Belgium, according to the same source. The announcement triggered a large-scale drug trafficking investigation.
This seizure in Saint Petersburg is the second of its kind within a month. In early January, officials discovered over a tonne of cocaine in a container shipped to Russia from Nicaragua, as per the Russian customs service.
