Supermarket chains Delhaize and Colruyt will increase the prices paid to beef producers from Monday.

The announcement was made on Friday by Marianne Streel, President of the Walloon Federation of Agriculture (FWA), and later confirmed by Delhaize with Colruyt revealing a statement is forthcoming. Both companies have not provided further details about the increase.

"This is good news," Streel commented, arriving at the first meeting of the Food Task Force. The meeting – held on Friday afternoon at the Federal Public Service Economy building in Brussels – brings together food producers and retailers.

The goal of the meeting is to restart discussions on setting prices and the distribution of margins between different players in the supply chain. The meeting comes a week after agricultural world protests.

Preparatory meetings have taken place throughout last week. About thirty representatives are participating in the discussion led by Federal Agriculture Minister David Clarinval.

Walloon Minister Willy Borsus, Federal Economy Minister Pierre-Yves Dermagne, Secretary of State for Consumer Protection Alexia Bertrand, and Flemish Agriculture Minister Jo Brouns – who is being represented – are also present.
