The Royal Meteorological Institute (RMI) has issued a code yellow warning for heavy rain in several provinces in the country over the coming days. The emergency number 1722 has temporarily been activated.
Heavy rain is expected in some areas of Belgium until Tuesday, according to the RMI. As a warning, code yellow has been in force in the provinces of Limburg and Liège since Sunday night.
"From Sunday night to Tuesday night, it will rain profusely in some areas of the country," the RMI said. "Over a 24-hour period, up to more than 25 to 30, and locally up to 40, litres per square metre (l/m2) of precipitation may be recorded in parts of the provinces of Liège and Limburg."
In the Liège province, the amount of rain may reach 35 to 40 l/m2.
To avoid overloading the emergency services, the Home Affairs Ministry has activated the 1722 number. Anyone who has suffered storm or water damage and requires assistance from the fire brigade can seek help via the e-desk. According to the emergency services, this is the fastest method.
In non-life-threatening situations, 1722 can also be called. The 112 emergency number should only be called for potentially life-threatening situations.
