The youth federation Infor Jeunes released a guide on Friday to assist 16-17-year-olds, who are called to vote for the first time in the European elections on 9 June. The guide aims to equip these first-time voters with the know-how to express their voices.

Despite the requirement to vote in the upcoming European elections on 9 June, 16 to 17-year-olds who do not participate will not face penalties. Justice Minister, Paul Van Tigchelt, and the College of General Prosecutors made this decision on Wednesday.

Two years ago, the federal government granted the right to vote in the European elections to youngsters aged 16 years and over. However, the constitutional court, after its second consideration of this reform in recent weeks, decided that this participation is not optional, but mandatory – as it is for adult voters.

Uncertainty remained over what measures would be taken against 16 to 17-year-olds skipping the ballot on 9 June. In theory, if they are subject to the same voting requirements as adults, they should also face the same penalties, although prosecution is uncommon in reality.

Last Wednesday, the restricted ministerial committee examined the constitutional court’s decision and decided to follow it.

Following this meeting, Justice Minister, Paul Van Tigchelt, and the College of General Prosecutors agreed that a directive would be drafted to exempt minors from prosecution should they fail to meet the voting requirement.
