The overnight rainfall has led to extended traffic queues throughout Flanders on Monday morning, Het Nieuwsblad reports. At 08:00 this morning, there were 300 kilometres of traffic jams.

Peter Bruyninckx, a spokesperson for the Flemish traffic centre, stated that these queues are “exceptionally high”, having gone from 150 kilometres of traffic jams at 07:15 to 250 kilometres in the space of half an hour.

“We hardly see any incidents on Monday morning,” the spokesperson told Het Nieuwsblad which made these traffic jams so exceptional. According to him, they can be attributed to “the weather and especially the rain showers.”

Indeed, the traditional morning rush hour turned into a “rain rush hour” due to worsened driving conditions due to the wet road surface. Bruyninckx called on motorists on Flemish roads to be aware of possible delays to their journeys.

According to the latest reports, there are still 30 minutes worth of traffic queues in and around the Kennedy tunnel in Antwerp.

Translation of tweet: "We start the new working week as we ended the previous one: with heavy traffic jams. At 07:00, our traffic jam barometer is already peaking at over 200 km of traffic jams on the Flemish highways. Busy and lots of rain!"
