Brussels University Hospital (HUB) has launched a campaign to prevent pressure ulcers, targeting both patients and healthcare staff.
Pressure ulcers, also known as bedsores, are skin and tissue injuries caused by prolonged pressure on areas like heels, sacrum, and hips. They typically begin with persistent redness and can quickly develop into deep wounds if pressure isn’t relieved and multidisciplinary care isn’t provided.
Humidity can worsen their occurrence, especially in the summer. During hot weather, the hospital advises regularly refreshing and changing the bedding of elderly, bedridden, or long-term hospitalised patients. Malnutrition linked to prolonged immobility can also accelerate their development.
Without prompt intervention, pressure ulcers can cause severe pain, grave wounds, and necessitate complex, heavy, and lengthy hospitalisations. It’s crucial to alert a nurse or doctor immediately if you suspect such an issue.
Prevention is better than cure. The hospital suggests regular movement every two to three hours, using preventive surfaces like mattresses and cushions, and daily monitoring of the skin in high-risk areas.
