Almost 400 police interventions in Brussels on New Year’s Eve

Police intervened 395 times in Brussels on New Year’s Eve Friday night, a spokesperson for the Brussels Ixelles Police said on Saturday morning.

Several dozen people were also placed under arrest, according to Belga News Agency.

Public transport operator STIB reported several cases of damage to buses, trams and bus shelters, without specifying the extent.

A large number of fireworks were set off throughout the evening, despite a fireworks ban being in place throughout the Brussels region from 23 December to 9 January.

A custom-made multi-commune arrangement, covering the territory of the six Brussels police zones, had been established especially for New Year’s Eve.

The police intervened 116 times in the Brussels-West zone and 110 times in the Brussels-Ixelles zone, where they made 30 and 44 arrests respectively.

Four arrests were also made in the Midi zone. The Midi, Marlow (Uccle/Watermael-Boitsfort/Auderghem), Montgomery and Brussels-North zones together recorded 169 interventions and 55 arrests.

The Fire and Emergency Medical Service (SIAMU) was called out 35 times for objects under fire in the streets, mainly bins.

Six interventions also took place for burning cars in the Brussels-Ixelles (1), Brussels-West (2), Brussels-Midi (2) and Brussels-North (1) areas.

In total, the fire services intervened 72 times and 120 ambulances were called.
