A 100-meter track will be laid out on Saturday at the Place de Brouckère in Brussels, allowing everyone to try their hand at the sprint.

This Brussels City Council initiative has been organised in collaboration with the Memorial Van Damme to be held on Friday 2 September at the King Baudouin stadium.

From 2.00 p.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday, each runner who tests the track laid out at the Place de Brouckère will be timed and awarded a diploma. “For the fastest ones, places for the Memorial Van Damme are at stake,” the City Council announced in a press release.

“To encourage them, renowned athletes will be present, including former European and Olympic champion Kim Gevaert, (4×100 relay, Editor’s note), the new director of the Van Damme Memorial, and 100-metre-sprinter Kobe Vleminckx, freshly returned from the European Championships in Germany,” the Council said.

“Seeing the Van Damme Memorial leave the King Baudouin Stadium and take to our streets gives everyone the opportunity to practice sports in a public space,” added Brussels Councillor for Sports Benoit Hellings.
