Brussels Environment, the regional agency, has announced that public access to Brussels’ parks, nature reserves and forests, including the Sonian Forest, will be closed from 17:00, announced on Tuesday.

The news is due to an orange warning from the Royal Meteorological Institute (RMI) for potential thunderstorms and floods in the heart of the country.

Notices outlining this decision will be placed at the entrances to regional parks and Brussels’ forests, and wardens will provide further public guidance. It is also advised to avoid areas near trees throughout the regional territory, given wind gusts could exceed 80 km/h.

The restriction will remain in place until Wednesday morning, the regional agency further adds. Post-alert, Brussels Environment staff will conduct a clean-up and safety operation at the affected locations.

Between 17:00 and 20:00, an orange warning for thunderstorms and flooding was issued for the provinces of Hainaut, Namur, Walloon Brabant, Flemish Brabant, Limburg, Antwerp and the Brussels-Capital Region.

A yellow alert has also been issued for the provinces of Liege and East Flanders. This yellow alert lasts until 23:00 across all central regions, from Hainaut province to Limburg.
