A suspect has been arrested in the case surrounding the suspicious death of former lawyer Jan-Willem Peeters in the Brussels municipality of Molenbeek earlier this week, announced the Brussels Public Prosecutor's Office on Friday.

The lifeless body of Peeters (37), who reportedly died being shot five times, was discovered on Wednesday morning outside the door of his rented house in Molenbeek.

"The suspect was brought before the judge, charged with murder and placed under arrest," Sarah Durant, spokesperson for the Brussels Public Prosecutor's Office in a press release. "The investigation is still ongoing and in the interest of the investigation, no further announcements will be made."

Not only the circumstances but also the timing made Peeters' death suspicious. One day later, he was due to sign the deed of sale for two houses. The money from these public sales went to Peeters.

The Public Prosecutor ordered an investigation into murder; the prosecutor and the examining magistrate arrived on the scene later that day, along with the medical officer, the ballistics expert and the Federal Judicial Police laboratory.
