Waste collection has been suspended in Schaerbeek’s Place Liedts District, the alderwoman in charge of Cleanliness, Deborah Lorenzino, announced on Thursday evening.
The decision by Bruxelles Propreté came after yet another physical assault on garbage collectors, the third in a fortnight.
Two employees of Bruxelles Propreté were victims of a knife attack at dawn on Tuesday in Place Liedts. “They were taken to hospital, but fortunately were not seriously injured,” said the alderwoman.
On 24 August, two Bruxelles Propreté employees were hit with a shovel in the same neighborhood and taken to the emergency services. Just under a week later, on 30 August, a garbage collector was almost mugged by a gang coming out of a cafe.
The municipality of Schaerbeek and Bruxelles Propreté met on 6 September to arrive at solutions and proposals were made, according to alderwoman Lorenzino, who says she is now waiting for the response from Bruxelles Propreté.
“Discussions have taken place and we are examining the proposals,” Bruxelles Propreté spokesman Donald Leclaul said. “However, we cannot guarantee the safety of our workers in this area at this time,” he added.
