On Wednesday afternoon between 600 and 700 people were evacuated from the federal police building located on Rue Royale in Brussels. This evacuation was due to a significant release of smoke from an emergency generator, said Peter De Waele, spokesman for the Federal Police. The building’s emergency generator was down for maintenance on Wednesday afternoon. During the operation, smoke was released from the generator and as a precaution the staff present in the building was evacuated.
According to the spokesman of the Federal Police, the building is being secured and those evacuated have not yet been able to return.
