Roads shut on Thursday and Friday for the EU summit and D19-20 demonstration

Local Brussels Capitale-Ixelles police have advised motorists not to go to Brussels by car during the European summit on Thursday and Friday, especially during the morning rush hour on Friday the 19th. The D19-20 Alliance has planned a “pacifist circle” around the event from 7am, followed by a march. Roads and roundabouts in the Schuman area will be closed by police from Thursday 1.30pm until the end of the summit on Friday afternoon. Extra measures will be put in place for the protest planned on Friday morning. The Schuman roundabout, rue Froissart (between Schuman and rue Juste Lipse), rue de la Loi (between Schuman and Boulevard Charlemagne) and Reyers central tunnel (shut from midday Thursday) will be shut to traffic during the whole summit. Bus lines that go through these areas will be diverted, and the Schuman/Froissart access in the Schuman metro station will be closed.

From 7am on Friday, the avenue Cortenbergh and rue Stévin will also be inaccessible by car. The demonstration will also block off the rue Belliard around midday. During the rest of the summit, the rue Belliard as well as the avenue Cortenbergh will have some of their lanes closed during the day.

The D19-20 Alliance action will involve Belgians and Foreigners and protest against free exchange treaties and “all types of austerity”.
