Brussels’ five shelters for the homeless hosted 680 people last night, Samu Social was informed on Monday. There were 839 requests for a bed although some of the requests simply expired because, as if sometimes the case, people later found an alternative solution for the night.
The five Brussels reception centres have 870 places, which can go up by a hundred in the case of an emergency.
In Wallonia in this season, there are seven centres for the homeless. There are no centralised statistics and each centre is responsible for reporting its activities once a month.
In total, across Wallonia there are 353 places available to accommodate the most needy – beds in night shelters, reception centres, barracks, etc … Namur can offer 63 places, Charleston 87, Liege 106, Mons 28, La Louvred 16, Verniers 23 and Tournament 30.
