A fake website using the name Legrand-Nicolis Attorneys and mentioning approximately 40 attorneys of the Brussels bar led to the defrauding of approximately 70 French victims, for a total of 2 million euros, revealed the daily La Dernière Heure on Thursday. The Brussels prosecutor adds that the case is being investigated. The procedure for the scam involved sending a letter to someone who had just had a death in the family, pointing out that they could get over 100,000 euros via a life insurance plan, if they sent the unpaid fees which the deceased had yet to clear.
Most of the attorneys named have filed a complaint for identity theft and forgery. The complaints have all been filed and collated in the Montgomery zone police stations. Some 10 attorneys met with the president of the French-speaking bar of Brussels, Mr. Stephane Boonen, to get an update on the case on Wednesday. The president of the bar may file a complaint as well in the name of the bar council. The site is still online.
