Brussels: end of security measures at courthouse gate

The gate at the entrance of the Brussels courthouse is unmanned on Monday (today). Anyone can walk into the building, and there are no security or ID checks, contrary to measures put in place months ago following heightened security alerts in Belgium. Once again the process was interrupted by the lack of security personnel. Security guards found themselves understaffed on Monday, and decided to stop controlling the comings and goings of visitors to the courthouse in Brussels, in order to focus on monitoring court sessions involving prisoners.

Amongst others, a terrorist trial with 32 accused including 7 behind bars, is taking place from Monday amidst heavy police presence.
Understaffing also explained why the assizes trial of Abdellatif Lachiri started an hour late on Monday afternoon.
