Demonstration in Brussels calling for the closure of abattoirs

Organisers say between 250 and 400 people demonstrated in Brussels on Sunday. They were protesting about the way animals are treated in abattoirs and on fishing boats. “More and more people are going vegetarian or vegan. Authorities could do more to reinforce this message”, says the animal defence organisation Bite Back, which organised the demonstration. After Paris, where 1,500 people demonstrated on Saturday, Berlin, Los Angeles, Sydney, Istanbul and Montreal, it was Brussels’ turn to host the 14th international protest.

At the end of the speeches at the Main station, the demonstrators went in the direction of the Botanical Gardens and Boulevard Anspach. During the march, symbolic gestures were organised, including one in front of the McDonald’s opposite the Stock Exchange.

The organisers, who are calling for abattoirs to be closed, say around 63 million animals are killed for human meat, milk and egg consumption each year.
