The Brussels region has around 256 private butchers and charcuteries. More than half of them don’t offer pork products, but do sell meat produced in a way that respects Muslim rites. Around 141 butchers in the capital are halal, which is just over 55%, La Dernière Heure said on Wednesday.
The figures were provided by Atrium, the regional agency in charge of helping Brussels businesses. They are mainly in Molenbeek, part of Anderlecht and St Gilles.
These butchers don’t just have Muslim customers. This could be because they are cheaper than traditional butchers and charcuteries.
