Brussels Airport registered a 14.6% increase in the number of passengers last year compared to the previous year, according to Eurostat (European Statistical Office) which published a figure of 21.75 million passengers on Wednesday. The Belgian airport ranks 2nd in Europe for growth, right after Athens, where the number of passengers leapt by 21.8%.
The airport with the biggest rise in the number of air passengers is London Heathrow with 73.37 million passengers, an increase of 1.4%. Paris Charles de Gaulle saw the second largest rise (63.65 million, 2.8% rise), followed by Frankfurt Main (59.41 million, 2.7% rise). Zaventem ranks 17th.
Belgium overall registered a 9% increase in the number of air passengers, which reached 28.77 million. The rise in passengers in the EU hit 4.4% to bring the figure to 880 million passengers.
