Migration crisis: Lowest number of asylum applications in Belgium last week

The number of registered asylum applications last week was the lowest one since the beginning of the migration crisis. This appears in figures released yesterday (27 March) by the state secretary for asylum and migration, Theo Francken.

Last week 177 asylum applications were registered, a decrease by 41 % compared to the preceding week. As 52 applications were multiple, there were only 125 new applications, which is the lowest figure since the beginning of the migration crisis last September. At the height of the crisis 1 900 asylum applications were filed each week.

The asylum seekers last week were mostly Afghans (44), Iraqis (12 and Syrians (10).

According to the office of Theo Francken, the decrease is due to the closure of external borders and the winter climate.
