Proposal for more space for religion in the Flemish Catholic education system

The identity of Catholic education in Flanders is not in danger according to Flemish education minister Hilde Crevits (CD & V). She made the statement in the regional parliament on Wednesday (4 May).

Her statement was prompted by a proposal by the Flemish Secretariat of Catholic Education (Katholiek Onderwijs Vlaanderen) on places for worship at school intended for pupils of different faith, reported De Morgen and Het Laatste Nieuws.

"It is an ambitious project," said Lieven Boeve from the Secretariat of Catholic Education.

Asked by members of the Flemish parliament, the minister recalled that freedom of education is guaranteed by the constitution. She nevertheless requested further information about the proposal.

"I have already been assured that a common message will be transmitted and that this that will be done in a dialogue between different philosophies."

The minister stressed the importance of a dialogue between different philosophies and religions and said the aim was not to launch a "school war".
