Police are victims of more serious and widespread violence. La Libre Belgique reported on Thursday (26 May) that 8 000 incidents of violence against police officers were identified in 2014 and 2015.

“Of the 8,000 incidents in question, only 1,200 are prosecuted and 300 perpetrators were convicted,” explains Vincent Gilles, president of SLFP Police. He notes that in recent years “things haven’t changed significantly.”

He also mentions “a taboo” in the police force: there are 66 suicides a year in the police force and a dozen deaths resulting from direct violence against a police officer.
