Power failure prevents access to the national population register

The failure affects the work of the police and the population services in the municipalities. The power failure occurred yesterday evening (6 July) and was due to technical maintenance of the key computer in the system. The operation of the tax service that enables income earners to fill in their tax declarations on-line is not affected.

"Many hardware components have been damaged," said FPS Interior. The federal public service is not sure when the fault will be resolved but ensures that everything is done to have the system running again as soon as possible.

The national register is the system which ensures the recording, storing and communication of information relating to the identification of Belgian citizens and foreigners residing in Belgium.
