From next year a new ID card will require only one visit to the municipality office. De Tijd reported on Tuesday (26 July) that it will be possible to apply for an ID card and upload the photo on-line.

The Interior Minister Jan Jambon (N-VA) announced his plan for on-line application last May but want first to consider whether the new e-government procedure can be managed safely without risk for identity theft.

"At the end of this year, a pilot project will start in cooperation with the city of Antwerp," confirmed Olivier Van Raemdonck, spokesperson of the minister. "Early next year, we´ll expand the test to other cities. And by mid-year, after evaluation, we’ll offer the service to all Belgian municipalities."

Currently the procedure for applying for an ID-card is cumbersome and varies by municipality.
