“The extreme right behind the letter” The measures at the town hall were lifted at 15 pm. A suspicious envelope containing white power and addressed to the mayor had arrived around 12.30.
Muriel Targnion, the mayor of Verviers, was confined inside the building together with her daughter, employees, police and firefighters.
The mayor said that there was no reason to worry. “It isn’t that easy to find a dangerous substance. Despite the opening of the letter, no one showed any symptoms,” she explained.
She described the letter as “quite extreme right. Someone hold me responsible for the presence of Muslims in our town. The letter was also critical of a Muslim alderman in the town council,” she said.
