Four billion euro in tax revenue is "blocked"

Unclear how much will be collected Four billion euro in estimated tax revenue is currently blocked according to the minister of finance Johan Van Overtveldt who replied to a parliamentary question by Griet Smaers (CD & V).

Much of the amount, or 1.7 billion euro, relates to insolvency issues in liquidations, bankruptcies or debt settlements.

To this can be added 1.3 billion euro subject to appeals and 700 million euro relating to collection procedures or ongoing investigations.

"Four billion euro, that's a lot of money in these budgetary difficult times," said Griet Smaers.  He suggests a harmonized recovery procedure to make tax collection  more efficient. He also calls on the finance minister to implement his plan against tax fraud.
