One self-employed person of six in Belgium under the poverty line

Last year 112 000 self-employed persons earned less than 12 500 euro. The European poverty threshold for a single person is 13 020 euro per year.

Het Nieuwsblad reported the figures on Sunday (14 August), referring to a survey by the Neutral Union for Independents (SNI).

"Knowing that last year nearly 705 000 were active independent, this represents 15.8% or one in six," said Christine Mattheeuws from SNI.

The survey of SNI is based on data from the National Social Insurance Institute for Self-Employed People (NISSE).
