Geert Bourgeois warns against the emergence of a police state

Judicial review of emergency measures necessary “We will not throw overboard the rule of law in order to stop those who want to destroy it,” said the Flemish Minister-President Geert Bourgeois (N-VA) on Friday (2 September) in De Standaard.

N-VA has raised the topic of the state of emergency since the beginning of the week. The nationalist partners in the federal government have made several reservations concerning the risk of suspension of freedoms and fundamental rights.

"Judicial review of detention, wiretapping and searches are the limit for me," Geert Bourgeois said. "Other measures within this limit are still possible in my opinion."

He seems to oppose his party chairman Bart De Wever who has advocated preventive detention of persons representing a potential risk in case of a state of emergency.
