Confrontation at Molenbeek - five arrests
Five arrests at Molenbeek-Saint-Jean.

The Brussels-West police zone carried out five arrests on Sunday afternoon, which brought police into conflict close to the metro station Beekkant in Molenbeek-Saint-Jean. Two policemen were injured and several police vehicles were damaged by stones and other projectiles, Johan Berckmans, the commissioner indicated. Around 4.30 p.m. calm was restored a police spokesperson said.

Commisioner Berckmans explained, “Problems began when our anti-banditry police squad undertook a check around 2 p.m. above the metro station.”

He went on, “Two individuals were arrested. Several youngsters in the neighbourhood got worked up and attacked the police. Rubbish containers were also emptied across the road.”

The police withdrew but returned to the environs of the metro station around 3.30 p.m. and confrontations flared up, in particular with a hail of stones. Two police were injured, one of whom was taken to hospital. Several vehicles were damaged and three individuals were arrested and taken in for questioning.
