Families with children living in small shantytown at Laeken

“The relevant services of the City of Brussels are working to find a permanent solution for families living in a small slum. The shantytown is located under a bridge in Laeken, near the Tour & Taxis site”, stated Tuesday Fabrice Voogt, spokesperson for Mayor Yvan Mayeur.

The situation of these persons of Romanian origin was made known by RTBF. They have built makeshift homes with salvaged material. The “L'appel du cœur” association discovered the shantytown about a week ago and has since provided support. Individual citizens are also active in providing the people with food or clothing.

The office of the mayor has stated that there are about forty people living in the slum since mid-August, half of which are children. No evacuation decision has been made. Priority is being given to finding an adequate solution to the situation with winter nearing.
