The Minister for Transport, François Bellot, submitted an official memorandum to the Cabinet on Thursday. This was limited in scope to obtaining a principal agreement on borrowing a billion euros to invest in transport.
He indicated on the RBTF platform, Jeudi en Prime, having stressed to the Cabinet that although close to an agreement, certain budget details had yet to be finalised.
According to La Libre Belgique, the political agreement resolves around an annual payment of 40 million euros (over 25 years).
The State may finance half of this budget, with SNCB and Infrabel sharing the rest of the burden, each paying an amount of ten million euros.
A source close to government stated to the daily publication, “The aim is concentrate the financial effort upon the Regional Express Network, as it is through this means that we can most efficiently eradicate traffic congestion.”
