Jean-Claude Juncker to reveal his vision of post-Brexit EU

The President of the European Commission, Jean-Claude Juncker will today (Wednesday) reveal a so-called “white paper” on the future of the EU. It will explore the various avenues for reform to preserve the threatened unity of Europe post-Brexit. This was announced by a spokesperson yesterday.

Mr Juncker had promised to deliver this contribution to the current debate on the future of the EU at a summit planned for March 25th in Rome. This is to celebrate, without the United Kingdom present, 60 years of the Treaty of Rome, the founding treaty for the European project.

The Commission spokesman Margaritis Schinas announced to the press, He “will go today to the European Parliament to present the white paper, which will also be adopted today” by all European commissioners.

The document will propose a series of avenues for reform, which the 27 leaders can use as a basis to plot a new course for the EU, which has been undermined both by Brexit and a succession of crises, as much economic as migration-based.

Mr Schinas stated, “We are discussing possible options which are positive and realistic, which all lead to unity and cooperation for the 27.” He added, “The idea is to start a vast reflection process around these realistic and credible options, on the basis of which we can move forward into the future.”

Mr Juncker has already publicly for a “multi-speed” Europe to overcome the divisions which very often bring particular projects to a standstill.
