La Libre Belgique is saying today (Monday) that the March 22nd suicide bombers had potential successors in mind. This is based upon an audio recording lasting for around twelve minutes, addressed to their contact in Syria.
The terrorists alerted the people behind the attacks that both weapons and men were ready to assist with other jihadist initiatives.
The conversation, held by the terrorists Najim Laachraoui and Ibrahim El Bakraoui, was recorded on the eve of the Brussels attacks on March 21st, 2016.
Both mention close confidants, being Abou Imrane, who at that time was hoping to go to Libya or Syria, and “the Amin brother”, who also swore allegiance to Islamic State, hoping to become part of jihadist activities.
La Libre Belgique states that the investigators are convinced of having identified Abou Imrane. This is now thought to be Bilal El Makhoukhi, arrested in Laeken on April 8th, 2016.
Amin, however, says that this may have been his friend, Hervé Bayingana Muhirwa, who was arrested on the same day.
He was also hiding Osama Krayem (also known as “Osama K”) in his accommodation. Osama K is the Swedish man who abandoned the idea of blowing himself up in the Brussels metro on March 22nd.
