Trump to attend Brussels NATO summit on May 25th

The American President, Donald Trump, will participate in the summit of NATO leaders, scheduled to be held in Brussels on May 25th. The White House has confirmed this in a statement published on Tuesday evening (Wednesday morning in Belgium).

The White House statement indicates, “The President is delighted to meet his counterparts within NATO and to reassert his firm commitment to the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation. He is also pleased to be discussing the critical issues for the alliance, particularly the shared responsibilities of the allies and NATO's role in the war on terror.”

Yesterday (Tuesday) a spokeswoman from the Atlantic alliance announced that heads of state and government of NATO member countries would meet in Brussels. This would be their first summit since Donald Trump was elected President.

During his campaign, Trump harshly criticised the role of the organisation, which has been established since 1949.
