Brussels attacks: no disciplinary proceedings against Sébastien Joris
Disciplinary proceedings will not be taken against the Police Liaison Officer, Sébastien Joris. The matter is more one of “lessons learned.”

Today (Monday), the Mediahuis publications indicated that no disciplinary proceedings have been started against the Police Liaison Officer, Sébastien Joris. Joris had been accused of negligence by the Minister for the Interior, Jan Jambon, in the process of returning the terrorist, Ibrahim El Bakraoui, to Belgium via Turkey.

During an investigative committee hearing, Mr Jambon had previously indicated that a decision upon potential disciplinary proceedings was still possible through to March 31st.

This will not now happen. However Jan Jambon stressed that all measures have been taken to ensure that a scenario, such as that which took place in Turkey, does not happen again.

The Minister went on, “Seemingly, Mr Joris followed the procedure. His superior has confirmed this.” Jambon further said, “However, in this case, we should adapt the procedure. This is no longer a question of discipline, but simply of not ignoring the fact that an error occurred on Mr Joris's part.”
