The "Taxi Plan", promised by the Brussels Minister of Mobility (sp.a) Pascal Smet, will be ready and is aimed at subjecting everyone, including regular taxis, limousines and Uber cars, to the same rules, reported De Tijd and L'Echo on Saturday. The new plan, which outlines a new legal framework, will soon be submitted to the Advisory Council of the Taxi Sector.
According to sources close to the case, the minister will modify the vehicle licensing system for granting individual licences to drivers (about 3,000 active in Brussels). Uber drivers will also be able to obtain licences if they comply with social and tax regulations and successfully complete a short training.
Also, the minister wants to improve the taxi service by increasing the maximum number of vehicles allowed in Brussels to 1,800, 500 more than at present. This number is equivalent to the number of drivers driving in Brussels today for the Uber platform.
Smet refused to comment, stating that he wanted to reserve the plan for his new system to the Advisory Council of the Taxi Sector.
