Terrorist act in Brussels-Central - Werchter organizers take extra security measures

The organisers and the security agencies of the festivals organised in Werchter are taking additional security measures. Concrete blocks will be placed along the roads for the first time and a system will be set up, where necessary, to enable authorities to be able to rapidly issue announcements to the population in the event of an emergency. The persons in charge of the management of the car parks and the campsites will also have to pass preliminary screenings. The first event - TW Classic - will take place on Saturday 24 June.

Concrete blocks will be placed on the main roads along the plain of the festival, Rotselaar mayor Dirk Claes said. "In the event of an emergency, all the festival goers will receive a message indicating the instructions to be followed." Previously, only people working on the plain and its surroundings were screened. An expanded safety perimeter will also be put in place for Rock Werchter."

Beyond these new rules, the safety measures taken in recent years will remain the same: festival-goers will have to undergo security checks before being allowed onto the plain. To ensure that the controls do not lead to excessive queues, the organisers call on the festival-goers not to encumber themselves with excessively large bags and to avoid bringing along backpacks. The list of prohibited items at the festival can be found on the Rock Werchter website.

These supplementary security measures have been announced as a terrorist act was perpetrated on Tuesday evening at the Brussels-Central station.
