Assaults against police in Belgium remain a problem

While the number of attacks against police officers has remained on the same level in recent years, the number of days of work incapacity following such incidents has tripled, according to figures from the Minister of the Interior Jan Jambon. Het Laatste Nieuws reported the figures on Thursday (14 September).

The number of violent incidents involving police officers has varied between 512 and 544 in 2013 – 2016. However, the number of days of police incapacitation due to violence has tripled, from 2 936 in 2013 to 9 049 in 2016.

According to the minister of interior the increase is linked to acts of terrorism. The minister says that "aggression against agents remains a problem."
