Music trio from Haifa brings message of hope to Brussels

Mon Areej is an indie-folk trio based in Haifa, Israel, with songs in Arabic and Hebrew. During a European tour it appeared yesterday at Art Base in Brussels. The trio consists of singer Eleanor Khateeb, Tom Klein on cello and Assaf Alush on acoustic guitar.

Together they have created a blend of traditional Western songwriting in Arabic and Hebrew with Middle Eastern influences. The sounding arrangements make the lyrics in Arabic and Hebrew sound surprisingly similar.

Areej in Arabic means fragrance. Formed in 2013, Mon Areej released its debut EP album in 2015 and has since then attracted much attention in the local musical scene.

The coastal city Haifa is Israel's third largest city with nearly 300 000 inhabitants and known for its openness and Arab – Jewish co-existence.
