The Residence Palace is refusing to let Puigdemont hold a press conference

Sacked Catalan President Carles Puigdemont is currently in Belgium and will hold a press conference at 12h30, his lawyer Paul Bekaert has confirmed. There is still incertainty to its whereabouts. There has been a request to hold it at the Residence Palace, opposite the European Commission’s Charlemagne building in Schuman. The building reserved to press is still under the Belgian government's management and it has to hold it there.

The message that Mr Puigdemont wants to deliver is also not clear. Some sources have hinted the declaration of an exile government in Brussels, while other rumours suggest the filing of an asylum application.

“I can only restrict myself to the legal options (of such a demand) in Belgium. But we have still not decided anything, all options are on the table”, Mr Bekaert his lawyer repeated on Tuesday. “There has also not been a request to extradite him back to Spain, so we still have time”, he specified. The office of the Catalan representation in Brussels was also unable to provide more details on Tuesday morning.
